At home

[Turtleneck: J.Crew; Sweater: thrifted; Jeans: Citizens of Humanity; Booties: Report; Necklace: J.Crew factory (a great similar one); Watch: Nixon; Ring; Aloha Sunday]

Here's a litte peek at my current home with this outfit post! The longer daylight hours were cooperating that day, but the weather was still frigid. I'm hoping it will actually feel like spring in New England by the time I get home from my time in San Francisco! (Please excuse the whacky part on my hair in these pictures!)

Dotted

[Pants: Forever 21; Top: Forever 21; Cardigan: J.Crew via Buffalo Excahnge; Shoes: Dolce Vita (similar); Nails: Essie 'Sew Psyched']

Not much to say here. Just really, really, really sick of snow.

So Wrong

[Top: thrifted; Pants; Francesca's; Loafers: Cole Haan; Necklaces: Joyo; Watch: Nixon; Ring: Aloha Sunday

Conventional wisdom indicates that a top with puffy sleeves and shoulder pads is just wrong. But my newfound love for thrifting and of elements of 80's and 90's fashion throws that idea out the window. I mixed this top with the more current baroque-style pants and my favorite geometric jewelry to give it a more modern edge. But as Heidi Klum told us in last weeks' Project Runway, going all the way 80's is just wrong. (Seriously, two of my favorite designers there created a strapless gold prom dress with the bottom 18 inches covered in ruffles. Shudder.)

This Boy

This wonderful man is away at a photography conference in Vegas this week, so I'm putting him on the blog to make it seem like he's not actually that far away. Yeah, I know. It doesn't really work that way. But he deserves some air time on here, because he's awesome and takes my photos for the blog. Oh, and he's darn cute and has some serious style. He's a huge Bonobos fan and has a talent for thrifting some serious treasures. Like the sweater he's wearing in this post. But not that hat, because that Russian fur gem has been in his family for some time, and he just dug it up from our basement. Anyways, he's a real keeper!

Florals & tweed

[Dress: H&M; Scarf: J.Crew factory (I love this one); Shoes: H&M (similar); Earrings: Francesca's; Nails:  Essie 'Sew Psyched']

I know it happened a million years ago, but this is what I wore for the Oscar party we attended. Not exactly an evening gown, but definitely more dressed up than I get on a regular basis. Oh, and this dress was definitely wayyyy more low cut than I typically prefer, so I remedied that with this bright scarf. Works every time.

Good Riddance

[Shirt; L.L.Bean, thrifted (similar); Cardigan: J.Crew factory; Jeans: Citizens of Humanity; Necklace: J.Crew factory; Boots: vintage Salvatore Ferragamo (similar, dreamy current version here), Ring: Aloha Sunday]

Ya'll are probably sick of hearing me (and every blogger out there) talk about impending weather changes, but I want winter to know just how unwelcome it is here. I'm being gracious, though, and giving winter-only items like this flannel shirt a few last opportunities to see the light of day.

In all seriousness, though, this L.L.Bean shirt was part of major thrifting bounty in January. It reminds me of the fabulous plaids that J.Crew had been putting out this season, but was way more appealing with its $5 price tag. This is one thing I will miss about winter: it's easier to find large and cozy sweaters and flannels at thrift stores than it is scoring the cute dresses I live in come the warmer weather. Any suggestions? Should I learn some alteration skills or what?

Oh, and this is how I feel when I think about spring coming:

Sartorially Inspired

Sometimes I see photos of street fashion and think I can never come up with such crazy outfit combinations.

And then I see photos like this, and think, yes, that I can do, and that I love.

via The Sartorialis
I noticed style surrounding New York Fashion Week can be so outlandish, but I love the more refined, minimalist sensibilities of these European fashionistas. They look so cool and understated and not like they spent hours dressing to catch a photographer's eye.

Anyways, here's my interpretation.

[Sweater: Thrifted; Jeans: Old Navy; Pumps: Zara; Coat; Gap (thrifted!!); Necklace; BaubleBar; Ring: Forever 21; Watch: Nixon; Nails: Essie 'Sew Psyched']

You can't really get more basic than jeans, a sweater, and a good wool coat, but that photo from The Sartorialist was a reminder of just how chic that combination can be.

I took some liberties with the jewelry (and posing), though.

Spring Cravings

Boston just keeps dumping snow on us and I'm officially sick of all my giant winter sweaters.

So what do I do? Start buying some spring clothes already. I feel like I've been accruing dresses for the last six years, so I switched my focus to fun pants. Here's what I came up with:

colorprint trackpants wide leg
1/2/3

I've been searching for some styling inspiration for these, since they're not my typical wardrobe item, and Pinterest has turned up lots of treasures!

I love how this pair is styled with a two-tone neutral sweater, some classic black pumps, and almost  no jewelry. The minimalist styling really lets the print of the pants shine.

I'm always a fan of a chic but super casual look, so this one definitely caught me eye! I'm loving the graphic tee and sneakers. Socks too! It shouldn't work, but it just does.

I also love the simplicity of a white tee, necklace, and sandals in this look

Anh of 9to5Chic makes these track pants look very polished with a blazer, and I'm hoping to do the same with my blue pair.

I can't wait until the spring weather is here to cooperate with these looks. Bare toes and short sleeves are not a match for the snow. The silver lining, though? This look from Laura of On The Racks has plenty of inspiration for styling up my printed pants for winter, with the right amount of layers and booties!

What do you think? How would you still printed pants?

Slouchy Stripes

[Striped Sweater: H&M (old); White blouse: Forever 21; Pants: Forever 21; Booties: Report; Watch: Nixon; Necklace: J.Crew factory store]

I absolutely saw an outfit similar to this in Lucky Magazine, and was excited to recreate with pieces I already owned. And I'm not the least bit ashamed of that. Why not take inspiration wherever you can get it?

Better Days

[Dress and shoes: H&M; Tights & necklace: J.Crew factory store]

Oh how I wish the weather now worked for an outfit like this. Say goodbye to dress and heels, and hello to weeks of 12-pound snow boots and fisherman's sweaters. Thank you Nemo.

The Ultimate Hand Me Down

[Fur jacket: My grandmother's; Silver jacket; H&M; White Blouse: Gap; Jeans; Citizens of Humanity; Boots; vintage Ferragamo; Necklace: J.Crew factory; Watch: Nixon; Ring: Aloha Sunday]

This jacket comes from my grandmother, who passed away four years ago. It's been in my closet in Connecticut since then, because I was a waitress and a college student and there was no place for fur in my life at the time. When I started seeing more fur and faux fur pieces on bloggers and in my Pinterest feed, I knew it was time to dust this off. Maybe it's cheesy that I needed to see others wearing similar things in order to get the confidence to pull this out, but, hey, that's what happened. I'm just thankful that I can remember my grandmother by physically wearing something of hers, and dreaming up what events she must have worn this to back in the day.

Uniform

[Sweater: thrifted; Top: Old Navy; Jeans; Citizens of Humanity (similar); Loafers: Cole Haan; Watch: Nixon]

A cozy cardigan paired with a bright top is a uniform of sorts for me. This particular tank was winterized with this thick knit sweater. You can see the fall version of this look here.

Is It Spring Yet?

[Polka dot shirt: J.Crew factory; Top: J.Crew factory (seen here); Pants: J.Crew factory; Pumps: H&M; Watch: Nixon; Ring: Forever 21]

I wore this outfit on one of those balmy 40ish degree days a couple weeks ago. The good news is that weather is allegedly making a comeback today. It's still not spring, though, and this outfit sure makes me wish it were.
